How Much Weight Can the Loadrunner Electric Wheelbarrow Move?

One of the first questions people ask about an electric wheelbarrow is simple: how much can it actually move?

The Loadrunner's GW1 geared hub motor can produce up to 160 Nm of peak torque, with an approximately 30:1 all-steel gear reduction designed specifically for high-torque, low-speed hauling.


How Much Weight Can the Loadrunner Move?

The Loadrunner is designed for serious hauling, including loads in the 300–400 lb range.

The GW1 wheelbarrow motor we use has an impressive 30:1 all-steel gear reduction ratio, giving unheard of torque and efficiency when running at low speeds. This makes it far more capable than most other similar sized hub motors that are based on conventional ebike drives, allowing it to climb over large bumps and obstacles with ease.  It's been extensively proven out over many years of demanding use without a single gearing failure.  

That makes it especially well suited for moving things like:

  • Soil and compost
  • Gravel and rock
  • Concrete 
  • Construction materials
  • Firewood
  • Landscaping supplies
  • Tools and equipment
  • Jobsite debris

Testing has demonstrated the system hauling approximately 400 lbs up steep inclines.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that every wheelbarrow should be loaded with 400 lbs.

 

Check Your Wheelbarrow's Weight Rating

It's important to distinguish between the hauling capability of the Loadrunner motor and the structural load rating of the wheelbarrow itself.

If the manufacturer rates your wheelbarrow for a particular maximum load, that rating still applies after the Loadrunner is installed.

The Loadrunner electric motor conversion kit may outlast the life-span of your wheelbarrow - we’re ready for this! Fortunately, because the Loadrunner is a conversion kit, you can easily move your electric motor over to the new wheelbarrow. 

The motor wheel, controls, battery system and other Loadrunner components can be transferred to another compatible wheelbarrow.

 

How Far Can the Loadrunner Move a 200 lb Load?

The amount of work you can do on one charge depends on the weight you're moving and the slope you're travelling on.

Grin has calculated the expected range for a 200 lb (90 kg) load using several different battery capacities and grades:

Most wheelbarrow trips are relatively short distances of approximately 10–50 meters, which means you can do hundreds of trips on even the smallest battery size.

What If I'm Carrying a Lighter Load?

Load weight has a significant effect on range.

As a rough guideline, Grin estimates that you can expect approximately twice the distance when moving a lighter 100 lb load compared with the published 200 lb figures.

For example, the 6Ah configuration that provides roughly 33 km of flat-ground range with 200 lb could provide around 66 km under comparable conditions with a 100 lb load.

On a 10% grade, the corresponding rough estimate would increase from 5.4 km to about 10.8 km.

These lighter-load figures are useful rules of thumb rather than separate published test results. Terrain, tire pressure, battery condition, starts and stops, and the wheelbarrow itself will all affect real-world range.

 

Regenerative Braking Makes Downhill Safe and Easy

Going downhill with a heavily loaded conventional wheelbarrow creates a different problem: instead of pushing the wheelbarrow, you're often fighting to stop it from accelerating away from you.

The Loadrunner includes regenerative electric braking, which controls the wheelbarrow while descending and can return some of that energy back to the battery.

This gives you much greater control over a heavy load on sloped terrain and reduces how much force you need to provide yourself.

How Long Does It Take to Recharge the Batteries?

Recharge time depends on the battery system you choose.

The Loadrunner can operate using pairs of common Milwaukee, Makita or DeWalt power-tool batteries. Charging time therefore depends on the batteries and charger you're using.

One major advantage of removable power-tool batteries is that you can keep additional charged battery packs available. Instead of waiting for the batteries in the wheelbarrow to recharge, you can swap in another pair and continue working.

For the Loadrunner with LiGo batteries, the standard 2A charger takes a little over three hours to charge a 6Ah two-LiGo setup.

A 9Ah system using three LiGo modules takes approximately five hours. A faster charger such as Grin's Satiator can substantially reduce charging time.

 

So, How Much Can the Loadrunner Move?

The Loadrunner electric drive system has demonstrated the ability to move approximately 400 lb loads, including uphill, while providing up to 160 Nm of peak motor torque.

In the case where you’re moving material 50 metres across a property. On flat ground, the published 33 km loaded range of the 6Ah setup represents the equivalent of about 660 separate 50-metre loaded trips.

For a representative 200 lb load, battery range can extend up to 33 km on flat ground with 6Ah of battery capacity, while sustained steep climbs consume significantly more energy.

But the Loadrunner doesn't redefine how much weight your wheelbarrow itself can safely carry. The wheelbarrow manufacturer's rating still matters.
